ATM Safety

The most important key to using your ATM safely is to be observant. Be aware of suspicious persons near or around the ATM machine. If you see anything that looks out of the ordinary go to another machine or return later and notify local police. Some other common sense tips on using your ATM safely are as follows:

  1. It is a good idea to have your ATM card in your hand and ready to use as you approach the ATM so that you do not have to take extra time at the machine.
  2. Use your body to shield the ATM keyboard when you enter your pin number. Do not give someone the opportunity to see you entering your pin.
  3. Put away your cash immediately. Do not display or count it at the machine.
  4. Remember to take your receipt and ATM card when the transaction is complete.
  5. If you use a drive-up ATM, make sure your passenger side window is rolled up and the door is locked. This will help to prevent a thief from entering your vehicle while you’re getting money.

Using an ATM at night presents other problems. If possible, take another person with you. Park in a well lighted area close to the ATM. Do not use the machine if the lights are not working. If overgrown shrubbery is blocking the view of the inside of the ATM, use another one. Notify the bank if there are visibility problems.
