The Sharon Fire Department has successfully secured a state grant to outfit its firefighters with essential ballistic gear, ensuring their safety in the event of an active threat or shooter situation.

The state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and the Department of Fire Services (DFS) has awarded the Town of Sharon Fire Department $18,518.58 in state fiscal year 2024 funding for the Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program.

The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced $5 million in awards to 321 Massachusetts fire departments on Feb. 6.

“Every single day, firefighters across Massachusetts put themselves in harm’s way to protect their communities,” Governor Healey said. “They deserve our thanks and our support. The Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant program is just one way we can express our appreciation for that selfless dedication."

“The grant will enable us to replace outdated equipment and procure specialized gear designed to fit our female firefighters appropriately,” Sharon Fire Chief Michael Madden said.

Chief Madden said the department is grateful to the Governor’s office, Secretary of Public Safety and Security and Department of Fire Services for supporting this program.
