Disease from Insects - Current Risk Level

Massachusetts DPH

10/16/2023

MDPH has concluded the mosquito testing season with 164 WNV (West Nile Virus) positive mosquito samples from Barnstable, Berkshire, Bristol, Essex, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, and Worcester Counties.

MDPH also reports 28 EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) positive mosquito samples from Barnstable, Bristol, Hampden and Worcester Counties.

Average daytime temperatures will continue to support populations of mosquito vectors which pose a risk for human transmission until a statewide hard frost. Avoid mosquito bites by using EPA approved repellents, appropriate clothing and avoiding peak mosquito activity between dusk and dawn. Remove standing water by emptying containers and tarps.
