Sharon artists are invited to submit work for the Juneteenth Art Show being held June 15 to 30 at the Sharon Community Center.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to Friday, May 10.

The Juneteenth Art Show is sponsored by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, the Sharon Cultural Council and the Sharon Racial Equity Alliance.

“It will include all artistic kinds of submissions – spoken word, poetry, sculpture,” DEIC member Shelley Keimach said.

To capture both the joy and the sober reflection inspired by Juneteenth, members of the community are invited to submit works reflecting on the meaning and significance of Juneteenth. How does the Juneteenth celebration of emancipation evoke both joy and a recognition of contemporary struggles for justice and equality?

All mediums are welcome. Examples include, but are not limited to:

Painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic design and digital media, textiles, fashion, music, dance, poetry, short stories, essays, and the spoken word.

Work will be exhibited at the Sharon Community Center from June 15 to June 30. Digital submissions will be uploaded to the Sharon Racial Equity Alliance website.

An opening reception will be held Tuesday, June 18 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

Guidelines for submissions:

  • Proposals should be made no later than Friday, May 10. The actual artwork should be available for hanging/display/upload by June 1, 2024.
  • The Juneteenth Committee will review all submissions for appropriateness for public display. Vulgarity, hate and inappropriate speech, whether written or spoken, are prohibited. This community event is non-sectarian and non-partisan. This event and the works displayed are meant to be family-friendly, so Sharon residents of all ages can participate.
  • Submissions should be of a reasonable size - please give an accurate size approximation on your submission form so we can plan the exhibition. We may have to set aside submissions that significantly exceed the proposed size.
  • There are no prizes awarded, and pieces will not be for sale.
