Disaster Preparation
If you evacuate take youre pets:
The single most important thing you can do to protect your pets if you evacuate is to take them with you. If it is not safe for you to stay, it’s not safe for your pets.
Animals left behind in a disaster can be easily lost, injured, or killed. Animals left inside your home can escape through storm-damaged areas, such as broken windows. Leaving dogs tied or chained outside in a disaster is a death sentence.
Plan Ahead For Evacuation:
Prepare in advance for what your pet will need. You need to plan to be away from home for as long as three to five days. Have a sturdy pet carrier large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down.
Store nonperishable items in the carrier such as:
- Canned pet food
- Food and water bowls
- Cat litter and litterbox
- A familiar toy
- Bedding
- Medical records
- Proof of a current rabies vaccination
- Sturdy leash
Have perishable items at hand and ready to go such as:
- Dry pet food
- Pet medications
- Water
Put a label on the pet carrier with the pet’s name and your name and telephone number. List any behavior problems your pet may have or medical condition that a rescue worker may need to know.
