In an ongoing effort to conserve water, the Sharon Water Department is encouraging residents to upgrade their lawns with drought tolerant fescue grass seed, and is offering a high quality fescue seed blend at $20 per 20lb bag, on a first come, first served basis. Sharon residents can order up to two 20lb. bags per household. Fescue over-seeding typically requires approximately 4 lbs. per 1,000 square feet.
In addition to being drought tolerant, fescue grasses resist harmful insects and will survive in sunny or shady areas. They are easier to maintain than other grass types because they require less water and fertilizer. An added benefit is that fescues are slow growing grasses, so they require less frequent mowing.
After seeding, you must keep the seeds moist for the first few weeks to ensure good germination. Light, frequent watering will keep the delicate seedlings alive until they are well enough established to tolerate dry weather.
