NOTICE FROM THE TOWN CLERK

In 2003, the United States Department of State stopped designating new passport acceptance facilities that also issued primary birth documentation, unless the two functions were physically separated and acceptance agents could not create, amend or issue birth documents. At that time, the Sharon Town Clerk’s Office was “grandfathered” into the Passport Acceptance Program pending future action, as we had been accepted into the program in 1999.

On November 3, 2010 a letter from the United States Department of State was received outlining new requirements for Town Clerk’s Offices to continue in the Passport Acceptance Program and remain Passport Acceptance Agents.

In order to remain in the program, the facility cannot have the ability to print, create or amend birth records.  This is one of the many requirements issued by the State Department that the Town Clerk’s Office cannot meet.

Unfortunately, Wednesday, April 13, 2011 will be the last day the Sharon Town Clerk’s Office will accept Passport Applications.  For future information regarding passports, please visit www.travel.state.gov or contact the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-877-487-2778. We will no longer have passport applications or information.

It has been a pleasure for the past twelve years to be able to offer this service to the community.
