Pneumococcal disease is a leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the U.S.
This underscores the importance of pneumococcal vaccination for persons at increased risk for pneumococcal (bacterial) pneumonia. Those at increased risk for this disease are persons age 65 and older, people under age 65 with long-term health problems, such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, diseases resulting in weakened immune systems, etc.
If you are over age 65 and you have received only one dose of pneumonia vaccine....at least five years ago....a second dose is recommended.
The Sharon Health Department offers pneumonia vaccine by appointment only at Town Hall during the following hours: Tuesdays 3-5 PM; Fridays 9-10:30 AM. There is no charge for the vaccination. For those over age 65, please bring your health insurance cards. Please call for an appointment: 781-784-1500 X1206.
